Understanding Gum Graft Surgery
Receding gums can stem from various causes like aggressive brushing, genetic predisposition, gum disease, or simply aging. When gum tissue recedes, it exposes tooth roots, leading to increased susceptibility to decay, sensitivity, and cosmetic concerns.
What is Gum Graft Surgery?
Gum graft surgery involves placement of tissue, typically from the patient’s palate, to areas where gums have receded. This procedure aims to restore gum tissue and address associated oral health issues.
Preparing for Gum Graft Surgery
Preparing for gum graft surgery involves a few key steps:
- Appointment Details: Plan for two appointments: a surgery session and a follow-up to remove sutures and monitor healing.
- Diet and Fasting: No dietary changes or fasting are necessary before the procedure.
- Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home post-surgery due to potential effects of pain medication.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia will be used to numb the procedure area. (For anxious patients we offer sedation options at TND Periodontics & Oral surgery)
- Duration: Expect the surgery to take about only 60 minutes.
- Post-Surgery Care: We will provide all our patients with post-surgical care instructions and take-home care package which includes antibacterial mouthwash, specific toothbrushes tailored for the surgical site, sterilized gauze, and more. Everything you need to ensure optimal healing.
The Procedure
During gum graft surgery:
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered at both the donor site (typically the palate) and the recipient site.
- Tissue Harvesting: Gum tissue is carefully removed from the donor site.
- Graft Placement: The harvested tissue is then sutured over the receding gum area.
Success Rate
Gum grafts generally have a high success rate, especially when patients adhere to proper oral hygiene practices post-surgery.
